Experience
Mitch Kessler is regarded as an innovative leader
by his peers in the solid waste industry. He has
over 22 years experience in developing and
evaluating integrated solid waste management
systems. Mitch is a nationally recognized expert
in the procurement and operations of materials
recovery and organics processing facilities. He
has been responsible for over 200 solid waste
projects pertaining to comprehensive waste
management, collection, recycling, and composting
programs for municipalities, institutions and
private corporations.
Specialty
A resolute problem-solver with a practical
perspective, Mitch’s approach is focused on action
and measurable results. A degree in environmental
law and his background in solid waste management
make Mitch uniquely qualified in the areas of
contracting, regulatory compliance and public
policy issues. In addition, he works closely with
elected officials assisting them in meeting their
communities’ objectives.

Robin Mitchell, Senior
Consultant
Experience
Robin Mitchell has more than 19 years of
experience in solid waste program and policy
development and implementation. She is a
recognized expert in public and private sector
recycling and waste management strategies, having
served as Regional Waste Reduction Specialist for
EPA Region 4 in Atlanta. Since joining Kessler
Consulting in 2000, Robin has managed a wide range
of projects involving collection options and
procurements, processing systems analyses, flow
control, residential and commercial recycling, and
waste composition studies.
Specialty
Robin specializes in strategic analysis of solid
waste programs and systems and the procurement of
solid waste services. She is a critical
thinker and an exceptional technical writer.
Robin’s background in recycling and
environmentally preferable purchasing, combined
with her practical approach to problem solving,
help her to seek out sustainable waste reduction
strategies. Her detailed evaluations provide a
starting point for solutions developed for and
with many of our clients.

Miriam Zimms, Senior Consultant
Experience
With more than 17 years in the solid waste
industry, Miriam Zimms has designed and managed
comprehensive waste management, recycling, waste
reduction, and purchasing programs for
municipalities, institutions and private
corporations. She has successfully implemented
rural, suburban, and urban programs for single-
and multi-family residential consumers and a
variety of commercial and industrial entities such
as airports, outdoor special events, libraries,
hotels/motels, restaurants, entertainment venues,
electric utilities, school districts, military
facilities, hospitals, office complexes and strip
malls.
Specialty
Miriam is a specialist in the design, management
and integration of commercial recycling and waste
reduction programs. With a strong business
background, she has developed a creative, yet
economic approach to applying marketing principles
to solid waste management. Miriam is an
“out-of-the-box” thinker, especially skilled at
identifying the environmental marketplace with
regard to social-cultural, economic,
technological, political-regulatory, and
competitive influences, as well as utilizing
distribution and logistics, segmentation and
targeting of industrial and consumer buyers and

Peter Engel, Senior Consultant
Experience
Mr.
Engel has more than 20 years of experience in the
development, implementation and analysis of
materials recovery and composting facilities,
collection programs, and integrated solid waste
management systems. An accomplished author and
speaker, Peter has guided and implemented programs
as far away as Cairo, Egypt, and as close to home
as Pinellas County, Florida.
Specialty
An
international research consultant and
environmental scientist since 1987, Peter is
especially skilled in the technical and economic
analysis, as well as the design and improvement,
of recycling and composting programs. He is an
expert in paper markets, both domestic and
international. His analytical skills and
no-nonsense approach deliver results to clients
both here and abroad.

Shane Barrett, Consultant
Experience
Shane Barrett joined Kessler Consulting after
working with the Florida Department of
Environmental Protection (FDEP). His experience
at FDEP provided Shane with a broad understanding
of the regulations and policies that govern solid
waste management in Florida. This informed
perspective has enabled him to assist clients and
analyze state reporting data with greater
efficiency and understanding. Since coming to
Kessler Consulting, Shane has conducted research
and data analysis for a variety of projects. He
has been in charge of a several waste composition
studies and pilot projects including a beach
recycling pilot for Pinellas County. Shane has
also developed several educational and outreach
materials, such as logo, brochures, and guides for
recycling programs throughout the state.
Specialty
Shane Barrett takes the lead when it comes to
compiling and analyzing recycling data. He has
proven to be skilled at conducting surveys,
overseeing waste composition studies, and
researching complex solid waste issues. With his
“no problem” attitude, Shane is able to get the
job done in a timely, efficient and thorough
manner.
